To begin with, it is necessary to say that if you are going to buy a bunch of flowers you should pay attention to the petals: they must be elastic and fresh. If petals are getting faded it means they are not very fresh.
Some flowers need special care. Flowers with wood stalks absorb water in small amounts. Roes, lilies, chrysanthemums, rhododendrons etc belong to flowers like that.
Poppies and dahlias have a soft stalk. Before putting such flowers into water, it is recommended to take the ends of stalks above fire for about half a minute till they get black. But be careful not to hurt the petals!
Besides, there are flowers which grow from a bulb, such as tulips, narcissuses, irises, hyacinths and other flowers. They have a white thickening on the end of a stalk. It is better to cut off this pert before air-conditioning as only the green part of a stalk can absorb water. At narcissuses and jonquils very rich juice which starts to exude from a stalk when you cut them. Wipe off the ends of stalks before putting flowers in water. Such flowers are not recommended to be held together with other colors at air-conditioning because their juice can have an effect on other plants negatively. Rich juice can close the ends of stalks from access of water. Bulbous plants as are not recommended to be put deeply in water. Stalks are impregnated with water, and petals become thin and lifeless.
